Paintball is one of the most exciting and adrenaline-inducing experiences out there. Running around, taking cover, shooting at other players, and being shot at creates a truly fun paintball experience. But what if you're brand new, or unfamiliar, with the sport? You're probably going to have a lot of questions or concerns. We're here to provide some tips and tricks so you'll be prepared, and hopefully have less questions and concerns before you hit the field!
Clothing - What to Wear and Bring
This is one of the most talked about topics when it comes to anyone that's new to the sport. Luckily, you don't need to bring an excessive amount of clothing, but there are a few things to take into consideration:
Layers
Don't wear too many layers! Having too much stuff on can limit your movement, make you overheat, or just be uncomfortable. The perfect way to prepare for paintball is to layer yourself up properly. I highly recommend a short sleeve shirt, a long sleeve shirt over that, and then a hoodie or jacket to cover both shirts. This way, you can easily put on or take away layers depending on the weather.
Pants and Shoes
You should always wear pants that cover your legs and ankles. This way, you're fully covered from dirt, debris, and can help with any other elements that can cause discomfort. Yoga pants or compression pants are definitely not recommended since they can tear pretty easily. For your footwear, wear socks that cover your ankles, and wear fully closed shoes that are durable, like hiking boots. Running shoes aren't a bad choice, but they tend to be thin and don't repel moisture that well. Definitely do not wear sandals, crocs, or anything that isn't completely close-toed.
Headgear
Although this isn't necessary, having something to cover your head isn't a bad idea. Baseball cap, beanie, sweatband, they're all good to have on as you play. I do think that having a beanie is the best option since it covers your hair, and getting paint shell out of your hair can be a big pain in the butt.
Extra Clothes
Playing paintball gets your clothes dirty. Really dirty. It's always a good idea to pack up some extra clean clothing to change into after you're done playing. Bring your clean clothes in a backpack or a duffle bag, and then you can throw your dirty clothes in that when you're done.
Snacks, Food, and Hydration
Paintball is a physically demanding sport, so prepare yourself with something to eat and drink in between the games you play! It's recommended to keep light snacks and water around so you can keep your energy up and stay hydrated.
Food and Snacks
You should absolutely bring some things to eat when you get hungry. Little snacks like cheese sticks, fruit gummies, granola bars, and fruit are really great in between the points you play. Heavier foods and meals, like sub sandwiches or pizza, generally aren't a good idea as playing on a full stomach can be bothersome. So if you're packing up some food to take with you when you play, bring little snacks that will keep your energy up throughout the day!
Drinks and Hydration
When it comes to keeping yourself hydrated, the best choice is always going to be water! Gatorade, Pedialyte, coconut water, or other hydration solutions are also great options as well. Staying hydrated is a must when you're playing, especially in warmer weather. Things like energy drinks, sodas, or coffee aren't the best choice as you'll become more dehydrated over time. Make sure to bring enough to drink for the whole time you're playing!
Getting Hit
Getting hit by a paintball has always been a major concern for anyone that's never played before. The only real advice I can give about that is to not be afraid to get hit, but don't ask someone to shoot you! It's best to get out on the field, go play and get that adrenaline pumping through your veins. If you happen to get hit while playing, you'll feel that impact, but it's going to feel like someone pinched you really hard. But the overall message is don't be afraid to get hit!
Closing Remarks
Having some key preparation before you go play, whether you've gone before or if it's your very first time, is essential to adding to your paintball experience. We hope that some of these little tips and tricks help you out, or even answer some questions you may have had before you go out and play!Â
